Description
Beautiful glass flower basket made by Duncan & Miller, circa 1930s. It is intended to be a flower basket vase. We have seen many sellers erroneously list this as a bride’s basket or tavern basket. It is neither. A bride’s basket is a glass fruit bowl in a silver base and “Tavern” is the name of one of Duncan & Miller's pattern lines.
We don’t know the pattern name for this lovely piece, but it is made of heavy (leaded?) pressed glass and had an intaglio wheel cut etched flower pattern. The handle has a braided pattern and the rim is scalloped. It will make a lovely flower vase for your fresh cut flowers or can be used as an elegant basket for a flower girl. It measures approximately 9.95” H x 5.5” W x 3.5” D.
Duncan and Miller, it was a well-known glass company in Washington, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh. At its peak, it was one of Washington's most successful companies.
Their items were known as "Duncan glass" or "Duncan Miller glass." The company was founded in 1865 by George Duncan with his two sons and son-in-law. By 1890, the company joined other glass companies to form the United States Glass Company. In 1892, the factory was destroyed by fire, and the company was relieved of its trust relationship with the US Glass Company. The second generation of the Duncan family then operated, once again, as Duncan & Miller. By 1955, economic pressures forced the company to sell its assets to the US Glass Company, who continued to produce Duncan-style glass until 1980.
